What is the point for those? They're easy to learn but, why are they called '7th' chords?

Gives it a unique sound. And to make it my guitar teacher is just teaching me this There are 8 chords/notes... Say you start with A B C D E F G A and you end on A also that is reapeated for all the others. Well its almost like playing a certain chord but adding the 7th Start with An a you would have to add a G into it.
